How should I swaddle safely?

Safe swaddling essentials

Swaddling can help some newborns feel secure and sleep better, but it must be done safely. Use a lightweight, breathable blanket or a purpose-made swaddle with secure fasteners. Ensure hips can move and the swaddle isn’t too tight around the chest.

How to swaddle:

  • Lay the blanket in a diamond and fold the top down.
  • Place the baby with shoulders just below the fold, tuck one arm down and wrap the blanket snugly across the chest, then bring the bottom up and the other side across.
  • Leave room for the hips to flex; the legs should be able to bend and move slightly to avoid hip dysplasia.

When to stop swaddling

Stop swaddling once the baby shows signs of rolling (typically around 2 months), or sooner if they begin rolling onto their tummy. Transition to a sleep sack or wearable blanket that allows arm movement. Always place a swaddled baby on their back to sleep and avoid loose blankets in the crib.
