How often should I bathe a newborn?

Gentle bathing schedule for the first weeks

Newborn skin is delicate and doesn’t need daily baths. For the first few weeks, bathing 2–3 times a week is usually enough. Until the umbilical cord stump falls off and heals, stick to sponge baths to keep the area dry.

Between baths you can keep your baby clean by gently wiping the face, neck folds, diaper area, and hands with a soft, damp cloth. Focus on comfort and skin protection rather than trying to make baths frequent.

How to bathe safely

  • Use lukewarm water (about 98–100°F or 37–38°C). Test with your wrist.
  • Use a small amount of mild, fragrance-free baby wash or plain water for newborns.
  • Keep sessions short (5–10 minutes) to avoid chilling and drying of skin.
  • Support the baby’s head and neck; never leave the baby unattended in water.
  • Pat skin dry and apply a gentle moisturizer if skin looks dry.

If your baby has cradle cap, eczema, or other skin conditions, follow pediatrician guidance about bathing frequency and products. For most healthy newborns, less frequent baths help preserve natural oils and reduce the chance of dry, irritated skin.
