Simple care until the stump falls off
Umbilical cord care is straightforward. Keep the stump clean and dry until it naturally separates, typically within 1–3 weeks. Avoid submerging the area in a bath; give sponge baths until it falls off.
Care steps:
- Leave the stump exposed to air when possible; fold diapers below the stump to avoid rubbing.
- If the stump gets soiled, clean it gently with water and dry it by patting with a clean cloth.
- Avoid alcohol wipes unless instructed by your provider; plain care and dryness are often best.
- Wash your hands before and after touching the area.
When to call a provider
- Redness, swelling, foul odor, or pus near the base of the stump.
- Bleeding that is heavy or persistent.
- Fever, excessive crying, or other signs of systemic illness.
If the stump appears irritated or doesn’t fall off within a few weeks, consult your pediatrician for guidance. Most cord stumps heal without complications with minimal care.
