Building a safe, predictable routine
A consistent sleep routine helps babies learn cues for sleep while keeping safety front and center. Start with simple, calming steps before naps and bedtime that you repeat each day.
Key routine elements:
- A wind-down period: dim lights, quiet activity, or a short cuddle.
- Consistent cues: a brief book, a lullaby, or gentle rocking for every sleep.
- Place the baby on their back in a separate sleep surface like a crib or bassinet with a firm mattress and fitted sheet.
- Avoid loose bedding, pillows, toys, and bumper pads in the sleep area.
Safety and consistency
- Room-sharing (same room as parents) is recommended for the first 6 months to 1 year for reduced SIDS risk; avoid bed-sharing.
- Keep the sleep environment cool and use sleep sacks rather than loose blankets.
- Follow a flexible but regular schedule: put the baby down drowsy but awake to encourage independent settling when ready.
Consistency helps babies settle into predictable sleep patterns, but flexibility is needed for growth spurts and development. If you’re unsure how to adapt routines to your baby’s needs, discuss strategies with your pediatrician or sleep consultant.
