Changing a newborn’s diaper is a skill that gets faster with practice. Start by gathering everything you need — clean diaper, wipes or warm water and cloth, barrier ointment if recommended, and a safe flat surface with a secure changing pad. Keep one hand on the baby at all times.
Begin by laying the baby on their back. Unfasten the dirty diaper but don’t remove it yet; use it to blot away the bulk of mess. Lift the baby’s legs by the ankles and slide the front of the diaper down. Clean the diaper area front to back, especially for girls, to prevent introducing bacteria. For boys, place a cloth over the penis if you’re worried about unexpected spraying.
After cleaning, allow the area to air briefly if possible, then apply any recommended barrier cream in a thin layer. Slide a fresh diaper under the baby, with the back higher under the baby’s waist. Fasten the tabs snugly but not too tight — you should be able to fit a finger between the diaper and baby’s belly.
Changing diapers also offers bonding time — talk or sing to your baby during changes. Over time you’ll develop a routine that works for you and your baby’s needs.
