Safe and effective tummy time
Tummy time strengthens neck, shoulder, and core muscles needed for rolling, sitting, and crawling. Start with short sessions several times a day from the first week — even a few minutes — and gradually increase as the baby tolerates it.
Practical tummy time tips:
- Place the baby on a clean, firm surface for sessions while awake and supervised.
- Use engaging toys, mirrors, or your face to encourage lifting the head and reaching.
- Try different times: after a diaper change or on your chest for a gentler start.
Progressing motor milestones
- Begin with supervised floor time and gradually add longer play sessions.
- Offer a variety of positions and play to encourage rolling and reaching.
- Celebrate small gains and avoid placing babies in containers that limit movement for long periods.
If you notice limited head control or very delayed progress, consult your pediatrician or physical therapist for evaluation and individualized guidance.
